What is the most effective teeth whitening procedure? Visit the Meadows Gate Dental office: we can assess your teeth and provide you with the most effective teeth whitening options. There are a number of teeth whitening systems that can be bought over the counter and used at home.
However, we recommend seeing a dentist for teeth whitening assessment first because not all teeth may whiten evenly. For example, old fillings, dental veneers, and crowns or caps may not whiten to the same shade as your other teeth and that may cause an uneven look.
Teeth whitening or bleaching is a relatively simple and non-invasive dental procedure that is used to whiten and brighten the color of natural tooth enamel. It is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.
Most dental patients want to have whiter teeth; and it is easier than ever to whiten your teeth. One of the most popular methods is to use a home teeth whitening system – it is highly effective. However, teeth whitening systems only work on natural tooth enamel and therefore it is important to have your dentist evaluate whether or not old fillings, crowns, or veneers will have to be replaced, and colour-matched, to the newly bleached teeth.
Teeth whitening is not a permanent process; you will need to touch-up the white every couple of years and more often if your diet contains food and drink that may stain your teeth (for example, coffee, tea, wine, or smoking of cigarettes).

Professional Teeth Whitening:
A dentist for teeth whitening is the best choice: we will review the teeth, the challenges (of crowns and fillings), and prepare custom molds for the whitening. You will need to come for two, relatively short, visits.
- At your first visit we will make the impression for the custom clear plastic tray for your mouth.
- At your second appointment, the trays will be checked for proper fit and adjustments will be made if necessary.
- You will receive a special whitening solution to take home and use in the custom trays.Use the trays and solution for not longer than the time and frequency indicated on the accompanying instructions (time and frequency is dependent on the solution).
- You will experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth but it will subside shortly afterwards.
- If you experience gum sensitivity or a burning sensation during the whitening, take the trays out and rinse your mouth.
- Using high fluoride pastes and rinses can help reduce the amount of sensitivity experienced.
You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays. We encourage you to have regular dental check-ups to maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile. Please contact the office if you have any questions.
Common Reasons to Whiten:
If you received excessive fluoridation during tooth development you may have developed Fluorosis (splotchiness or mottling on your teeth);
Normal wear of outer tooth layer;
Discoloration or staining of the teeth due to medications (for example, tetracycline can have that impact);
Yellow and/or brown stained teeth (typically a result of diet).
